    回到希腊

    自称懂得希腊文化是虚荣而愚蠢的,我们的无知大概相当于任何班级最差的小学生水平,我们不知道单词怎样发音,或应该在什么地方发笑,或演员怎样表演。在这些外国人和我们之间不仅有种族和语言的区别,还有历史传统的巨大鸿沟。奇怪的是,我们总是希望了解希腊,努力去了解希腊,永远感到被吸引回到希腊,永远在对希腊文化的意义提出一些解释,而这些解释是从那些不相称的零星碎片中得出的,与希腊文化的真实意义相去多远,究竟有谁知道?

    没有任何语言比希腊语更迅捷,舞蹈、摇摆、充满活力而控制自如。

    《奥德赛》只是一个传奇故事,一个航海民族凭本能讲述的传说。所以我们可以打开它,以孩子那样的好奇心理快速地读下去,看下面会发生什么。但这里没有任何幼稚的东西,有的是成熟的人们,狡黠、复杂、富有激情。世界也并不狭小,因为隔开一个个岛屿的海洋需要用手工造的小船来横渡,用海鸥飞翔的距离来衡量。的确,这些岛屿上人口不多,虽然一切都是手工,但人们也并不很忙。他们有时间形成一个非常尊严、非常高贵的社会,有古代的风俗传统支持,每个关系都有序、自然,又十分含蓄。帕捏罗帕从房间那头走来;瑙西卡在浣洗亚麻;他们的动作似乎充满美感,因为他们不知道自己美丽,天生拥有这一切,像孩子一样浑然不觉。然而在数千年前的那些小岛上,他们知道需要知道的一切。耳畔响着大海的涛声,身边是葡萄藤、草地、小溪环绕,他们比我们更清楚地意识到无情的命运。在生命的背后有一种悲哀,他们没有试图去减轻。充分意识到自己站在阴影中,但又敏锐地感受生存的每一丝震颤和闪光,他们在那里长存。当我们厌倦了模糊、混乱,厌倦了基督教的安慰,厌倦了我们这个时代的时候,我们就会转向希腊。
